Summary: Maize being a cross-pollinated crop in nature, non- availability of quality seed is a threat for food security to farmers in the inaccessible areas of Western Hills. With the collaboration of DADO, SSSP, ARS, Lumle and SDC/ CIMMYT/HMRPoject, a community-based on-farm maize seed production program has been performing well in Western Hills of Nepa1. Farmers are self-sufficient for maize seed at least in the vicinity the program area. Due to lack of technica1 know-how among the farmers regarding the complex nature of maize seed production, the overall productivity of maize had been static for several years. The objective of the program was to maintain the varietal purity in farmers' seed by participatory involvement of researchers, extension workers and farmers. Ultimately increased production and productivity of the farmers' crop wil1 a11ow extra income by selling their seed. A tota1 of thirty-six farmers in four groups were effectively involved in the seed production program in Myagdi and Palpa districts from 1999 to date. Source seed of Manakamana-1, Arun-1, White hill pool, Popu1ation-22, ZM 621 and Yel1ow hill pool was made available to the farmers in the groups. Farmers from Arthunge produced the seed of Manakamana-1 (about 1.8 mt on 3.0 hectare of land and Arun- 1 (l.0mt on 2.0 hectare) at Dudhelhola in 2000. Similarly, farmers from Bhakimli produced the seed of Manakamana-1 (2.3 mt on 2.5 hectare of land), White hill pool (1.0mt on 1.5 hectare) at Bhakimli of Myagdi district, Population-22 (1.0mt on 1.2 hectare), ZM 621 (0.05 mt on 0.03 hectare and Yellow hill pool (0.05 mt on 0.02 hectare) at Deurali of Pa1pa district. There was cooperation among Agricultura1 Research Station, Lumle, DADO, Myagdi, Seed Sector Support Project and farmer-to-farmer mechanism of marketing the seed was practised. Community-based maize seed production groups were directly benefited by the new enterprises of seed production that increased the farmers' income. From the above experience of a pilot maize seed production program initiated during 1999 in the Research Command Area (RCA) of Agricultura1 Research Station (ARS),Lumle, it is concluded that such a program can run smoothly with a little thrust on delivery of technica1 aspects to the community .
