Research undertaken sin 1979 has shown that tie-ridging makes it possible to increase moisture reserves in the soil and raise maize yields on the predominant soils of the Sudan savanna. By growing a range of genotypes on ordinary and tied ridges, the performance of these genotypes under two types of drought stress conditions (high and not so high) can be evaluated. This method was used to improve a population and evaluate certain maize genotypes. Two varieties, SAFITA-104 and Temperate x Tropical 42 have proved promising in terms of drought-resistance and two other varieties, Local Kamboinsé and Composite-77 80 have turned out to be "susceptible" to drought. From Pool-16, which is being improved, two varieties ("resistant" and "susceptible") have been developed but it cannot be concluded from the data that any progress has been made.
