Transportation of amino acids from vascular sap to the pedicel-placento chalazal region (PPCh) and further to endosperm takes place against the concentration gradient in the developing maize kernels. Significant differences were found in the size and composition of the amino acid pool in vascular sap vs PPCh and PPCh vs endosperm. There is no correlation between the concentration of amino acid in vascular sap and endosperm, whereas the concentration in PPCh is significantly correlated with that in endosperm. The results indicate the «buffering» effect of PPCh region on a variable amino acid pool of vascular sap.
