This study's objectives were to determine factors influencing the adoption of improved maize seeds and use of inorganic fertilizer for maize production by farmers in the Central, Eastern and Western zones of Tanzania. The logistic analysis and two stage least square results indicate that on-farm field trials increased the rate of adoption. Availability of extension services, variety and agro-ecological zone characteristics were the most important factors which increased both the rate and intensity of adoption in all the three zones. Variety preference and rejection were influenced by factors which minimized field loss. The results imply that farmers' participation in the research process and strengthening of the extension services are important policy issues for future development of the maize production sector in Tanzania.
