The National Maize Program in Ethiopia has released and recommended the following maize varieties for Sidama and Northern Omo zone: A-511, BH 660, BH 140 and BAH 540. The recommended seeding rate is 25-30 kg/ha with fertilizer rate of 100 kg DAP and 100 kg Urea per hectare. The objective of this study was to determine the factors intluencing the adoption of the recommended maize varieties and fertilizer and the role of credit in influencing maize production in the study areas. About 7% of the farmers in the lowland zone and 24% of the farmers in the intermediate zone grew improved maize varieties. The area under improved maize varieties was significantly higher for farmers in the intermediate zone (0.6 timmad) than farmers in the lowland zone (0.2 timmad). Forty- two percent and 47% of the farmers in the lowland and intermediate zones, respectively, used chemical fertilizer. Farmers in the intermediate zone (18.7 kg/ha) used significantly more DAP than farmers in the lowland zone (12.5 kg/ha). Farmers in both zones used about 8 kg/ha of Urea. Access to credit, livestock ownership, education, membership to an organization, and intermediate zone significantly influenced the adoption of improved maize varieties. The adoption of fertilizer was significantly influenced by access to credit, farmsize, and intermediate zone.
