Puebla is one the 10 most important Mexican states in terms of maize production. During 2001, the highlands, which include the Libres and Cholula units of rural development, contributed 40.6% towards the state's production (922/610 tons). The percentage increased to 60% when taking into account rainfed areas (INEGI 2002). In the highlands, maize is produced at 2,000 to 2,600 masl. Farmers sow main1y 1andraces, which accounted for 95.7% of the planted area during 1998-99 (INEGI 2000). Lopez et al. (1998) has shown that local landraces commonly outperform introduced improved varieties.
