Maize productivity in the hills is stagnant and hence there is a need to enhance productivity in order to maintain food balance in the region. There is a lack of location- specific improved maize varieties available for farmers. A study was conducted to evaluate improved maize varieties along with the farmers' local variety in farmers' fields on a participatory basis. Both early maturing and full season varieties with yellow and white grain types were included in the trial. All the local varieties both in the early set and the full season set included in the evaluation were taller and later maturing than the improved variety. Pool-15 was preferred for its extra earliness. Arun-4 in the early set and Rampur Composite, Manakamana-2 and Hill Pool (Yellow) in the full season set were identified as promising varieties in the tested locality. Among the white grained varieties, the farmers favored Arun-l and Manakamana-l for their attractive shining white grain. There is scope for improving local populations for shorter plant height, good husk cover and higher grain yield.
