Participatory Variety Selection (PVS) refers to the selection of preferred varieties of different crops by farmers under their own local management conditions and practices. The major objective of PVS is to overcome the bottleneck of the diffusion of farmer-preferred technology and to provide choices of varieties to fit in the niche environment. LI-BIRD initiated working in maize PVS in Mid-hills (Gulmi and Syangja districts) and Terai (Mahottari) from 1998 to 2000. Several varieties of maize (released, pre-released and local selection) were tested under farmers' field conditions at different domains of Gulmi, Syangja and Mahottari (Terai to high-hill). Among the tested varieties, Rampur Composite, Manakamana-1, Rampur-1, Hill Pool White, Hill Pool Yellow and Ganesh-1 were preferred by the farmers of Gu1mi, Syangja and Mahottari. Manakamana-1, Pop-22 and Rampur Composite were preferred by the farmers of Gulmi and Syangja districts against the ecological domains to which they were officially recommended. About 59%,65%, 70% of farmers were willing to grow at least 1 variety of maize in the following years in Gulmi, Syangja and Mahotttari, respectively. Similarly, farmer-to-farmer dissemination of the PVS variety is the most common process of varietal diffusion in the study area. This paper discusses and examines the PVS process and its effectiveness in promoting farmer-preferred varieties.
