Maize, also called corn, is a plant whose food value and many uses (food, livestock feed, industrial uses) make it one of the most important crops in the world. It was first used for food about 10,000 years ago by American Indians of Mexico. In order of world grain production, maize is second after wheat and rice is third. The United States, the leading producer of maize, produces about two-fifth of the world's supply in its Corn Belt. In Nepal, maize occupies second position in terms of area and production after rice. In the hills and mountains of Nepal, however, maize is the dominant crop and a major staple. The facts about maize in the world and in Nepal are presented in Box 1.
