Pest and diseases of maize in Indonesia: Status and research needs

The important insect pests are; seedling fly, corn borer, army worm, cut worm, and ear worm. Rats is also an important pest and is commonly found everywhere damaging different crops. Downy mildew is the most important disease of maize in Indonesia, followed by rust, sheath rots and, leaf spot blight. Some of the pests and diseases tend to decrease, but others increase year to year. The infestation rate of pests and diseases also varied at different planting dates in a year. A lot of research is needed in breeding for resistance and biological control, as they are the main components of integrated pest management.
