In late 1990 the International Irrigation Management Institute (IIMI) and Enterprise and Development Consulting (EDC) undertook a collaborative research study on farmer-managed irrigation systems (FMIS) in Chitral District, North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. The primary objective of the research was to initiate the process of developing a knowledge base that would provide reliable information on both physical and institutional features of indigenous irrigation systems and their management in Chitral.
