In late 1990 the International Irrigation Management Institute (IIMI) and Enterprise and Development Consulting (EDC) undertook a collaborative research study on farmer-managed irrigation systems (FMIS) in Chitral District, North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. The primary objective of the research was to initiate the process of developing a knowledge base that would provide reliable information on both physical and institutional features of indigenous irrigation systems and their management in Chitral. Such information is not readily available for Chitral District, or for most other areas of Pakistan's mountainous periphery. It is anticipated that such a
