In: International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna (Philippines); Agricultural Development Council, New York (USA). Consequences of small-farm mechanization. Los Banos, Laguna (Philippines). 1983. p. 139-149. Received Feb 198485-105874Summary: In Bangladesh, the economic necessity for farm level mechanization of rice processing does not appear strong. This may be extensive use of low cost, female family labor, and the low level of postharvest losses. The analysis revealed that average food loss per farm, due to wet season drying constraints, was well below the level at which using small-scale dryers for supplementary mechanical drying would be economical. In contrast, custom hullers, which have high labor productivity, are widely used. They were found to have caused some employment and income inbalances among the rural poor, and suitable programs are required to alleviate these problems
