Abstract in English and French
The market penetration of hybrid maize in Mexico is low (14 percent). A regional potential for 3 million ha of hybrid maize is assessed by environmental regional data, soil depth and an index of precipitation to evaporation. Substituting available hybrids for non-hybrid maize seed is expected to generate substantial increases in agricultural productivity and competitiveness of maize production. Regional priorities as well as government and company programs are assessed.
