A large area of the Indus Plain has been affected by salinity and sodicity. Eleven sites were selected from the problem areas of the Indus Plain and their saline-sodic soil profiles characterized for SAR, EC and pH. The ions of K, P, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn which were extractable in ammonium bicarbonate-plus-DTPA were measured to evaluate nutritional status of these soils. All these soils have too high SAR, EC and pH values to be suitable for normal agriculture. SAR, EC and pH values ranged from 40-504, from 6-54 dSm-1 and from 8.3-10.3, respectively. Among the extractable nutrients Zn was low in all soils, Fe was low in five soils, P was low in two soil, and manganese was low in on e soil. None of the soil was found deficient in K and Cu. A boron toxicity problem was indicated by the mannitol-extractable boron levels in two soils. Presence of salts in the entire profiles, low availability of certain elements and toxicity problem of B suggest intensive management on salt-affected soils of the Indus Plain
