The maize plant is extremely sensentive to stress at certain stages of its life circle, particulary during flowering, and inadequate moisture during this critical period may reduce a potential record crop to a total crop failure. The breeding and development of drought tolerant hybrids reduces the effects of drought. Stress will cause a reduction in performance but to a lesser extent among the tolerant hybrids.
