The paper discusses the effects of drought and what can be done to stabilize the maize industry. The maize plant is extremely sensentive to stress at certain stages of its life circle, particulary during flowering, and inadequate moisture during this critical period may reduce a potential record crop to a total crop failure. The breeding and development of drought tolerant hybrids reduces the effects of drought. Stress will cause a reduction in performance but to a lesser extent among the tolerant hybrids.
