At the beginning of heading there occur a high positive (linear) relationship between the lodging grade and the length of the second lower internode and spike density and a somewhat smaller relationship between the lodging grade and the diameter of the first and second internodes. On the basis of microscopic investigation it was revealed that lodging resistant genotypes distinguished by a larger filling of the stem and by a thicker layer of the sclerenchyma fibres than lodging genotypes. The obtained results permit to infer that selection for lodging resistance may be started already at the beginning of heading
