520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. One of the reasons responsibile for the scarce knowledge dealing with gene regulation for higher cells is certainly the difficulty of inducing and detecting the genetic elements involved in such a regulation in higher organisms. However, in maize, McClintock (1951) described at least one manner of inducing and revealing the presence of an active controlling element, obtained in a cell progeny which underwent a"breakage-fusion-bridge" cycle phenomenon. This paper describes a case of detection of controlling elements of the Ac and Spm types, originated in a plant which underwent breakage-fusion-bridge cycles. The Ac element turned out to be located in the chromosome which underwent the cycle, whereas the Spm is located in an undetermined position of the remaining genome. These findings confirm the obseration by McClintock that the cycle is capable of instigating genetic activity, through some mechanism, in the chromosome directly affected by the cycle as well as elsewhere.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
