Chemicals which have been developed to meet increasing demands on the world food supply and the growing need for production of plant foods are reviewed. These chemical compounds improve crop yield, nutrient composition and retention, post-harvest quality and storage properties of economically important crop plants and plant products. Such chemicals as growth regulators, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, plant hormones and a range of specific chemical treatments of the soil, foliage, flowers and fruits of plants have been investigated at subtoxic dose levels.
