Portola spring wheat, originally released in 1975, was developed by the California Agricultural Experiment Station and CIMMYT, Mexico. It was selected from the cross Ciano-Siete Cerros 66 X Ciano-Penjamo 62. Compared to Anza, whichit was intended to replace, Portola has a higher grain protein content and better milling and baking quality, but lower resistance to lodging and shattering. Yields of Portola have been lower than those of Anza in some trials.
