520 _aThe systemic disease of downy mildew (DM) caused by Peronosclerospora maydis Shaw has been an important constraint for maize production in Indonesia. Resistance against P. maydis is a necessary characteristic for developing high-yielding cultivars for release in the country. A molecular assisted selection (MAS) scheme had already started when the Indonesian maize breeding program involved the Asian Maize Biotechnology Network (AMBIONET). The strategic objective of the network was to enhance and support the capacity of the breeding program to adopt biotechnology tools for maize improvement. The main focus of the country research activities included improvement of maize for downy mildew resistance (DMR) and the study of the genetic diversity. In the second phase of the AMBIONET, the country team also initiated quality protein maize (QPM) work.
