520 | _aThe scientific and technological innovations have been the basis for promoting agricultural development. The historical focus of research on improved agricultural technologies has undeniably been successful. But, these strategies have had limited impacts on the intended beneficiaries, as the complexity of their livelihood and farming systems has not been taken in to consideration. The conservation agriculture (CA) in its initial version of zero-tillage in South Asia during 1970?s and 80?s is a good example of it wherein during technology development, little or no attention was paid to the farmers? knowledge for their local settings and innovations. However, linking dynamic knowledge systems of the farmers with scientific basis of technology through ?Participatory Innovation Development? on CA in its version of Resource Conserving Technologies (RCTs) played a great role in promoting the adoption of RCTs (3.0 million hectares) for resource conservation, poverty alleviation and sustainable development in irrigated intensive production systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plains of South Asia. | ||
