520 | _aLow soil fertility, exacerbated by occasional water deficit due to erratic rainfall, is an inherent rice production constraint in many rainfed lowlands, such as those in northeast Thailand. Integrated nutrient management strategies, therefore, are needed in these disadvantaged areas to improved soil fertility, increase yields, and augment incomes of the small-scale farmers who make up a majority of the 18 million people of this region. This paper summarizes some of the research achievements of the International Network on Soil Fertility and Sustainable Rice Farming (INSURF) during the 1988-91 period at four sites in northeast Thailand, where soils of varying physicochemical properties are noted for their low productivity. Research strategies included the use of a soil conditioner to improve soil physical properties; use of pre- and post-rice green manure (GM) crops, such as Sesbania spp., to increase available nutrients; green leaf manuring; fertilizer management; and crop establishment studies. A cropping pattern trial that included upland crops, such as grain legumes after rice, aimed at using residual soil moisture after the harvest of the rice crop. Research on N mineralization of different GM crops was also undertaken to evaluate N release patterns | ||
