520 _aIn April 1992, "PUSELETSO", which means "the regaining of that which we have lost" (due to the outbreak of RW A), was released. This cultivar has a Russian wheat aphid resistance gene called DN1, and is a backcross of Tugela (Kavkaz/Jaral "S") with DN1 (SA 1684) from ARC-Small Grain Institute, South Africa. This cultivar which is also acid tolerant was donated by the Smal1 Grain Institute to the Lesotho Ministry of Agriculture in 1992, to replace susceptible and poorly adapted (outdated) cultivars. Does this mean that R W A and acidity problems are solved in Lesotho? NO! The amount of seed available is not yet sufficient for all farmers and it is known that resistance breaking biotypes of aphids can font1 when constantly exposed to resistant cultivars. Since Lesotho practices dryland farming, it will always be subjected to drought and higher temperatures during September, which will cause a rapid increase in RWA numbers. Since not all Basotho farmers have adopted Puseletso and liming, they still suffer large yield losses due to the acidity problem. Puseletso has however shown excellent adaption to Lesotho conditions and has already made a significant contribution in Lesotho.
