520 _aWheat is one of the most important crops in Ethiopia and is produced across a range of agro-ecologies and crop management regimes. The CERES (DSSAT V3.0) wheat growth model is a useful tool for: i) evaluating alternative management strategies; ii) developing plans and policies to maximize resource-use efficiency specific to different environments; and iii) for the investigation of long-term weather risks. Wheat growing environments in Ethiopia have been clustered into 7 homogeneous groups using agro-climatic analysis. The genetic coefficients of 3 bread wheat and 3 durum wheat varieties were determined from field experiments at Kulumsa and Alemaya in 1997. Long-term weather data and soil physical and chemical properties of the 7 wheat growing cluster groups were used to estimate the potential yields and associated weather risks. Such simulation studies will assist plant breeders and agronomists in defining their goals and research approaches in different agro- ecologies.
