520 _aVirus-like particles were isolated in low yields (1 to 20 ug/kg) from leaf and root tissue of a number of lines of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown under conditions that excluded the introduction of known viruses by seed, soil, water contact, or insects. Extracted particles separated by rate-zonal centrifugation into discrete peaks were spherical (13.5 nm/50 S; 18 nm/72 S; 25 nm/118 S), germinate (24 x 14 nm/72 S), and "triplet" (36 x 14 nm/90 S). Germinate and triplet particles banded in gradients of cesium sulfate at 1.29 g/cm-3; a band of 10 % -shrunken particles formed at 1.31 g/cm-3.
