520 _aHost plant resistance (HPR) to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), in various degrees, has been observed in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum), triticale (X Triticosecale), oats (Avena sativa L.), rice (Oriza sativa), rye (Secale cereale), and maize (Zea mays L.). A major gene (Yd2) and a minor gene (yd1) were found in barley. Additional genes with minor HPR effects are suspected in barley. Major HPR genes have not been identified in wheat, triticale, or oats. We hypothesize that such genes exist, but detection is difficult because of the following factors: 1) polyploid species have homoeologous loci that may obscure single HPR gene effects; 2)
