520 _aIn Kenya, BYD was first noticed on barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in 1964. A severe outbreak on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley was noted in 1985-86. PAV- and MAV-like isolates of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) were present. Several known aphid vectors have been identified in Kenya. BYD was first reported in Ethiopia in 1967, and a major outbreak was reported in 1985. Serological tests confirmed the presence of PAV- and MAV-like isolates. BYDV has also been observed in Tanzania, Burundi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, but is not an obvious yield constraint
