520 _aIndonesia is developing groundwater sources for agricultural purposes by using tubewells. Data were collected from 66 tubewell users, 53 nonusers, and 30 farm laborers to investigate the effects on farm income and employment, and the feasibility of tubewell investment. Users were categorized by the number of years they had been using tubewell irrigation. Farm analyses for two alternative cropping systems indicated tubewell introduction, increased cropping intensity, production, and farm income. The increase in income varied with experience in tubewell operation. Financially, rice-rice-soybean was better than rice-rice-maize, yet economically
