520 _aThe combining ability effects were studied in a 4x4 diallel cross of spring wheat involving four parents and their 12 F1 generations for flag leaf area, yield and its components. The experiment was conducted at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during rabi season of 1992. The differences among the genotypes for flag leaf area, spike length, spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike and grain yield per plant were highly significant. The variances for general and specific combining abilities were significant for all the traits. The higher magnitude of GCA variance than SCA variance indicated the preponderance of additive type of gene action for flag leaf area, spikelets per spike and grain yield per plant. Genotype 6128-2 was better general combiner for grains per spike and grain yield per plant. The crosses Pitic 62 x 6128-2 and 4072 x 6128-2 involving one of the better general combiners for yield and its components showed their superiority in yield and some yield components. Thus these crosses provided a large scope for selecting high yielding genotypes in the subsequent segregating generations
