520 _aIn 1974 a wheat mutation breeding research was initiated to select semi-dwarf mutants. The variety utilized was IAC-5 which is not so demanding as far as soil fertility is concerned and shows a certain resistance to high soil A1 content. However its high culm length might cause yield losses due to lodging. After seed gamma irradiation, three semi-dwarf mutants were selected at the M2 generation. Since then, these mutants have been tested in several parts of Brazil. The results of the trials showed that on average the mutants yielded less than the original variety, and possible reasons for the reduced yield are discussed. (author)
