Nitrogen was applied to the soil at 3 different levels, and barley straw was added to 50 per cent of the experimental plots. An increase in organic matter and nitrogen contents was verified in the soil, and it was observed that under the experimental conditions plant residues were transformed into organic materials, but mineralization of the latter did not occur.
