520 _aThe paper discusses the impact of the highly protectionist agricultural policies of developed countries upon the Colombian economy. Subsidies on exportsand dumping are distorting international trade, affecting consumption and prices. World agriculture is not functioning in accordance with efficiency and comparative advantage and this is resulting in the frustration of potential exporters as well as threatening Colombian food security. Both factors lead to unemployment in rural areas. US and European rice policies are first described, indicating levels of subsidy afforded to exporters. The case of wheat is taken next:
