Data from research plots were used to illustrate the type of decisions that a farmer has to take in order to obtain maximum profits in maize production. Regression equations were used to predict the yield response to nitrogen applications and to estimate the optimum or the most profitable nitrogen requirements for selected plant densities. Maximum profit combinations of nitrogen and plant densities were estimated for different sets of input and output prices. The results indicate that nitrogen recommendations do not vary much with differences in plant density in the range of plant densities between 24 and 72 thousand plants/ha in both
