Mulching, strip cropping, and reduced tillage are used in various combinations with cereal-legume rotations to suit the range of soil fertility and climatic regions of the uplands of Northern Thailand. The use of relay cropping of peanut-pigeon pea and corn-blackbean or other suitable legumes and the use of a live mulch such as stylo showed the best results of preventing soil erosion and maintaining soil fertility. Strip cropping and mulching have decreased the dependence on structural earthworks to control erosion.
