Wheat planted in field plots on different dates was treated with fungicides at different times after the plants emerged for control of dwarf bunt . In the October planting there was an average of 15 . 0 % dwarf bunt - infected heads in nontreated plots that were covered with straw during winter. In comparable plots treated in early November , infection was held to 0. 6 % by hexachlorobenzene and to 2, 2% by copper oxychloride ; the mid - October treatments were less effective , yielding 4 , 3% and 3. 8 %, respectively.
