It was found that the Scottish method is simple, convenient, economical and more accurate. Staining of the mycelium is necassary for detection of loose smut mycelium in wheat. The mycelium was observed in the scutellum and never in the plumule bud. Laboratory counts based on scutellum infection were closely related to the number of smutted plants in the field T2 - Seed Science and Technology ER -
