The relatively impressive productivity gains that have been achieved in the maize, wheat and horticulture sub-sectors are largely attributable to an efficient system of production and marketing of seeds of these crops. It is widely believed that similar impacts have not been replicated in the semi-arid midlands. Numerous climatic, soil and institutional factors are thought to have constrained the development of seed production, distribution and trade in the semi-arid lands in Kenya. Using production and trade information that was obtained from a recent study of the seed industry in the semi-arid midlands in Kenya, the amounts of seed offered for sale and bought, as well as prices received or paid are estimated. Based on these assessments, the merits of two schemes of seed multiplication, distribution and trade that are being considered for implementation by research and development agencies are analyzed and recommendations offered ER -
