Maize varieties RCM 1-1, RCM 1- 2, RCM 1-3, and Vijaya Composite, along with local landraces like Meghalaya Local Yellow and Meghalaya Local White, were chosen for the farmer participatory breeding trials (FPBT) in Kharif in 1999 and 2000, and Rabi in 2000. In all, 191 farmers were studied during those seasons. The farmers had expressed a very strong overall preference for the maize variety RCM 1-2 over their own varieties, as well as over the other experimental varieties tested during those years. The performance for RCM 1-3 was a result of its relative earliness combined with high grain yield. Early maturity, high grain yield, high stover yield, grain size, grain color, and minimal water requirement were the factors that helped achieve superior results from post harvest yield. The superiority of RCM 1-1, RCM 1-2, RCM1-3, and Vijaya Composite over the local traditional variety during high rainfall conditions aroused keen interest among the farmers ER -
