Production of input responsive varieties is possible through the application of early maturing forms in hybridization practice. With reduction of plant height stem durability and lodging resistance increase. Spring barley variety Alaverdi is considered as a promising variety for the above purposes. It is the two-row barley, with yellow-grey spikes, spike length is 10 -12 cm, peduncles are long and easily shattered. The shoots are greenish and the stem is erect. The plant is suitable for the mechanized harvesting. This moderately early variety is characterized by drought tolerance and resistance to diseases. Grain number per spike is 34; weight of one spike is 13,7 g, 1000 grain weight is 44,7 g. Grain is elliptical. Spring barley variety Alaverdi was used as a mother form in our hybrid combinations. Total 60 hybrid combinations have been produced. Heterosis in plant height was observed with first generation populations observed from 25 crosses In the first generation in 25 combinations he- terosis on height of a plant was recorded, hybrids were taller, than parent varieties. However, In 35 combinations the hybrids have inherited short stalk from mother variety Alaverdi . Thus, using spring barley variety Alaverdi in hybridization we have received the short-stature hybrids interesting also for the other agronomic traits, which undoubtedly meet the standards of modern agricultural practice ER -
