Previous work in these populations (Labate et al. 1997, 1999) has demonstrated that examining changes in allele frequencies is an ideal approach to exploring genome-wide changes resulting from reciprocal recurrent selection. Reciprocal recurrent selection is a cyclical process of developing a population, evaluating individuals, and selecting desirable individuals as parents to begin the next cycle of selection. This method of inter-population improvement proposed by Comstock et al. (1949) has been used to improve the BSSS and BSCB1 populations.
