N2  - This paper reviews the types of results that 6-S years of on-farm research has developed for maize production by smallholder fanners in southern Africa. It is shown that the technology output has been quite conventional and to date, of limited impact on maize productivity. This has been due to the operational nature of on-farm research and the limited ways it has interacted with component research, extension and policy makers. However it is suggested that the fanner problem orientated approach demonstrated by on-farm research is becoming better understood and appreciated by component researchers and extensionists alike. Ideas are presented on how expansion of this approach will facilitate and widen the potential areas of advancement in smallholder maize production
