TI - Wheat spike fertility and fertile tillers number are enhanced by exogenous application of Cytokinin and Auxin PY - 2016/// CY - Mexico PB - CIMMYT KW - Wheat KW - AGROVOC N1 - Open resorce; WC; FP3 N2 - Four elite wheat genotypes from a CIMMYT Core Germplasm (CIMCOG) trial were selected for an investigation of the effects of externally applied hormones on spike fertility and grain yield. Hormones were applied at the1st node stage and at the booting stage. Three hormones were tested: an auxin, a gibberellin (via the use of a gibberellin inhibitor), and a cytokinin under field conditions at three different concentrations under irrigated conditions. Results showed that spike fertility increased with a high concentration of cytokinin (100 ppm) applied at the 1st node stage and low/moderate concentration (25 ppm) applied at the booting stage. The auxin treatment increased the number of fertile tillers per square meter. However, only for one genotype did yield increase significantly under hormone treatment, compared to the control plants (where no hormone was applied).
