This paper provides an overview of the patterns of adoption of direct-seeding methods in Asia. The rising wage rate, increasing availability of chemical weed control methods, and the need to intensify rice production systems were considered to be the major driving forces. The potential advantages and problems with direct seeding are discussed and the likely future patterns of changes are indicated. Finally, research priorities for improving the productivity of direct-seeding systems are presented T2 - Direct seeding: Research strategies and opportunities ER -
