To alleviate this problem, government agencies have indiscriminately promoted soil conservation measures developed in the industrialized world. However, measures such as conservation tillage have substantially different implications in tropical agricultural production systems. The paper reviews a number of factors that affect the potential of conservation tillage in the tropics, distinguishing specifically between mechanized and manual production systems. The paper identifies conflicting residue use as one of the major potential limitations for conservation tillage in tropical environments ER -
