N2  - Whilst there is general agreement among researchers on the need for farmers' participation in formal research and on the potential contribution by the different actors, i.e. researchers, farmers and extensionists, it is still not clear which demands have to be fulfilled for effective resource-poor farmer participation, to what extent resource-poor farmers can participate, who among the resource-poor farmers can participate, how farmer-initiated technological change occurs, and to what extent public sector researchers can participate in indigenous research. This paper based its discussion on the above questions
