These lines were planted at Debre Zeit, Ethiopia, on alfisol/mollisol soils in paired plots of 9 m2 following randomized complete block design in four replications. A plot from each line was protected from stem rust by application of the fungicide propiconazole. Clear differences on the effect of the fungicide were observed with mean grain yield loss of 35, 38 and 36% for the early, intermediate and late maturing types in the four test seasons. Maturity alone was not sufficient to determine yield loss due to the disease. The effect of the rust on the intermediate maturing type was the highest because the plants were green during the peak seasons of the rust epidemic. Rust severity levels and grain yields were not consistent in the late maturing type ER -
