The results exhibited differential crop response to applied N and P in the various agro-ecological zones. Wheat grain yield response surfaces demonstrated that the semi-dwarf cultivar Qubsa was markedly superior to the tall cultivar Mitike in terms of grain yield across all zones. However, under a high level of bromegrass infestation, the response curves for the two cultivars were similar. The %N levels in the grain and straw of Mitike were higher than the corresponding N contents of Qubsa. However, Qubsa exhibited higher grain N uptake (GNU) and total N uptake (TNU) levels than Mitike due to its higher grain yield levels across all N rates. In terms of GNU, Mitike with 123 kg N/ha resulted in the same level of GNU as Qubsa at O N. The results of the N rate by application timing trial showed that the main effects of N rate and variety on grain yield were significant. Mitike was lower yielding than Qubsa across both locations and all N rates. There was no consistent response to N application timing in the present study, but split application tended to enhance grain yield at some sites ER -
