In cv. Avalon, an estimated 0.5 t ha-l would be lost for every 10% increase in the disease. In glasshouse trials, the most effective fungicidal control of F. culmorum infection of wheat ears was demonstrated by tebuconazole and prochloraz, applied 7 days prior to inoculation. The variable retention of a sodium fluoroscein tracer was demonstrated on the ears of a range of wheat cultivars, and scanning electron microscope studies showed massive internal colonization of protected surfaces prior to the appearance of visible symptoms.
